Well, something or another seems to be giving me insomnia, so I figure I'll make the most of it and try to deal with this Islam thing.
But first, let me make a pathetic attempt at explaining the Trinity, since it is so frequently a barrier in Christian-Muslim dialogue. Note that this explanation is not necessarily true; it's only my own way of understanding the Trinity.
The Trinity says that God is one God but 3 persons. If this implies that 1 + 1 + 1 == 1, then it is a contradiction and obviously untrue. But I don't think it implies anything of the sort.
Now, what's a person? Someone who experiences things, as I keep saying. Something with a soul. I'm one person and you're another, hence I experience what I experience but not what you experience.
So for God to be 3 persons means someone is the Father but not the Holy Spirit, for example. They experience 2 different points of view.
But do they? What is the personality of God? Is it not a perfect personality? Doesn't that mean that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit would all have exactly the same personality, and see everything from the same point of view, namely the correct point of view? Isn't that kind of like being the same person?
So although there are these 3 persons, they have exactly the same personality, and in that sense are "one God". If you want to say that this really means there are still technically 3 gods, and insist that there must only be one God in the sense of the number of people that are God, then fair enough; but I question on what grounds you would insist on that. There is only one God in the sense that there isn't a god of war and a god of love (as the Greeks believed) with conflicting personalities; the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (on this view) have only one personality and are in no conflict.
I repeat, this explanation is probably not true; people who apparently know what they're talking about say that the Trinity is a mystery and can't be understood by us. But the point is that it is a logically possible explanation of the Trinity.
Therefore, the concept of the Trinity is not illogical.
